The central idea
How do we transform a site into an operating energy asset?
An energy project is not a power plant; it is a coordinated bundle of rights, land, grid, permits, contracts, equipment and capital.
An energy project is not a power plant; it is a coordinated bundle of rights, land, grid, permits, contracts, equipment and capital. The public preview explains the operating logic, professional relevance and boundaries before the complete guided application.

What you will learn
Four lessons that build one working mental model.
- 01
Originate and Secure the Project
Strategy, site, land, resource, grid screening, stakeholders, SPV and development budget.
A solar module and battery container can be purchased; an energy project must be created. It combines corporate rights, site control, resource, connection, permits, equipment, contracts, people and capital. If one critical right fails, equipment value does not rescue the project. The capstone asset is 100 MW solar with 50 MW / 100 MWh BESS. Its exact DC/AC ratings, shared connection and energy boundaries must be defined. The battery can capture solar clipping, shape export, trade or provide services only within grid, permit, control, warranty and market rules. Development converts uncertainty into evidence through staged spending. The aim is not zero risk, but a coherent, financeable allocation of risk and value. An origination thesis states why this technology, location and market can create value. It covers resource, land, grid need/capacity, permitting, community, supply chain, route to market, capital and exit. It sets rejection criteria before sunk cost biases decisions. For the hybrid project, the thesis may be: strong irradiation, feasible 110 kV connection, midday curtailment risk addressable by two-hour storage, and buyer demand for shaped renewable power. Each proposition needs evidence and a downside. Record assumptions, source date, owner and.
- 02
Obtain Rights and Design the Asset
Grid connection, planning/environmental/construction permits, licences, technology, layouts and interfaces.
Development, construction, generation, storage, supply or trading can require licences/authorisations under national law. Capacity thresholds, timing and entity matter. Market participation also needs registration, balancing responsibility, metering and agreements. Map licence sequence to energisation and COD. Change of control or transfer may require approval. Licence conditions create ongoing reporting and compliance. A construction permit does not automatically authorise electricity market operation, and a market registration does not cure missing grid rights. Define PV module, mounting/tracker, inverter, DC/AC ratio, collector, transformer, BESS chemistry, MW/MWh, coupling, PCS, BMS/EMS, plant controller and shared connection. Evaluate performance, bankability, safety, supply chain, warranties and service. Optimise whole-life NPV, not one component price. Higher DC ratio can increase yield/clipping; storage can recover some clipping but consumes CAPEX and life. Shared equipment reduces cost but increases common-mode outage. Maintain approved alternatives until procurement, then freeze controlled interfaces. Layout integrates resource yield, shading, terrain, drainage, geotechnical, fire separation, roads, cable lengths, environmental buffers, access and maintenance. BESS location affects cable losses, emergency access and noise. Substation orientation must align route and grid bay. Use survey, geotechnical and hydrology evidence. Desktop layouts can fail on slope, soil, flooding or.
- 03
Contract and Finance
EPC, equipment, O&M/LTSA, insurance, PPA/merchant route, financial model, debt/equity and conditions precedent.
CPs commonly cover corporate authority, equity, land, permits, grid, material contracts, insurance, technical/legal reports, model, security and no default. Separate conditions to signing, first utilisation and later draws. Each needs objective evidence and responsible owner. Waiver is risk acceptance, not administrative convenience. Track expiry and interaction: financial close can depend on EPC NTP while EPC price depends on close by a date. Closing checklist, funds flow and security perfection must be rehearsed. Passwords and approvals remain with authorised humans. “RTB” has no universal legal definition. Define it transactionally: land, permits, grid, design, contracts and financing at specified maturity with listed residuals. A project can be permit-ready but not finance-ready or connection-ready. NTP authorises contractor mobilisation and starts schedule/payment/LD regime. Conditions should include site access, permits, financing, design data and security. Limited NTP can protect long leads but must cap scope and termination exposure. Never use the labels without an evidence checklist and date. Link land, environmental surveys, permits, grid, design, procurement, finance, construction, tests and revenue commencement. Critical path is the dependency chain with zero/least float; delay there moves completion unless recovered. Track decision dates, authority review, appeals, seasonal constraints.
- 04
Build, Commission and Operate
Notice to proceed, construction controls, testing, energisation, COD, handover, operations, refinancing and exit.
An exit can occur at development, RTB, construction or operation. Buyer value depends on transferable rights, remaining obligations, risk and evidence. SPA structure allocates leakage, completion accounts/locked box, CPs, warranties, indemnities and earn-outs. Prepare change-of-control consents for grid, land, permits, PPA, finance and contracts. Clean up affiliates, claims and data gaps. Enterprise value bridges to equity after debt, cash, working capital and adjustments. Maintain asset readiness continuously rather than staging evidence only when marketing begins. Land, permits, battery rules and finance can require restoration, recycling and security. Estimate dismantling, waste, route and residual value conservatively. Battery end-of-life needs traceability and applicable regulatory compliance. Repowering may extend value but can require new grid study, permits, land extension and equipment compatibility. Do not include unapproved life extension as certain terminal value. Lifecycle responsibility begins in development through contract and design choices. No project workstream is independent. The land polygon limits layout; layout drives resource yield and environmental impact; equipment affects grid models and permits; grid date controls EPC programme and PPA long-stop; financing conditions affect NTP. Integration means managing these handoffs explicitly rather than holding more meetings. Create an interface register with.
Key takeaways
What should remain after the details.
- Missing one critical link blocks value.
- The authored source identifies “testable thesis and fatal flaws” as the correct interpretation.
- The authored source identifies “plant, route, access and needed rights” as the correct interpretation.
- Wrapped EPC still leaves owner obligations.
- The authored source identifies “false; capacity/control/import can change applicability” as the correct interpretation.
- High percent complete can coexist with late COD.
- The authored source identifies “defined scope subject to exclusions/owner duties” as the correct interpretation.
- The authored source identifies “only after quantity/profile/basis/imbalance terms” as the correct interpretation.

Worked reasoning
Resource and energy case
Solar yield uses credible irradiation data, layout, technology, losses, availability, degradation and curtailment. The BESS case uses import/export capability, usable MWh, efficiency, degradation, augmentation and dispatch. Hybrid production requires interval modelling against shared connection. P50/P90 definitions, meter boundary and scenario correlations must match finance. Storage does not increase solar generation; it shifts energy and loses some. It can increase exported value or reduce clipping under the right configuration. Independent technical review challenges assumptions and reconciles the final design. Update after layout/equipment changes and operating data.
